The Diabetes Card

 Confession Time.

As a child I remember going to restaurants and telling the hostess that my blood sugar was low so we had to get a table ASAP. My parents only did this when I when I was actually low. A few times when I was a teen  I would try to tell the hostess I was low when I was out to eat with a group of friends. Sometimes it worked. Sometimes it didn't. A few times the hostess would get me a glass of juice and tell me the table wasn't ready yet. I'm not terribly proud of doing this.

Have you ever played the diabetes card? In what situation? What are your thoughts on the diabetes card?

  1. Few and far between, but yes. The other day a waitress brought an Ice Tea for me, I added my pink packet of fake sugar did a quick taste and was like, ummmmm, Honey can you taste this for me? Oh waitress, was this the "Un" sweetened Ice Tea? I can't have the sugar, I'm a Diabetic.... got my "un" sweetened ice tea fairly quickly. Since we go there often, I don't think they will mix that up again. -- jimt1cgms

  2. Only gym class. I'd say I was low when I wasn't really.

And I've used diabetes to get the Disability Guest Pass at Disney. Which is so worth it and I don't feel guilty in the slightest. I have to up with enough shit. The least the world can do is let me cut the line. ;)

  3. I've often considered it but I don't think I've used it...yet. It's not to say it hasn't crossed my mind. I'm with Allison though - I would TOTALLY use it in that circumstance :)

  4. I think I only tried it once. My husband and I were going on a cruise, and we got a call that morning to tell us that the ship had been delayed. We were to report a few hours later than they had originally told us, but should also expect to have to wait on the dock for hours and hours until we were allowed to board. So I shamelessly said I was diabetic and could I be given boarding preference since I might need access to food, etc. Unfortunately, I was simply told not to arrive too early and to pack some snacks. :( Oh well - serves me right for trying to cut the line!

  5. I've had to play the diabetes card in college now. since they developed a new rule there is to be NO EATING or DRINKING in the classrooms. I actually had to go to my special needs advisor to get it where I can leave class or eat in the classroom. I just try to be respectful and bring something light and a bottled water. I've had to play the card another time with my insurance co in hopes they would expedite my needs faster.

  6. Yes, I've had to play the "diabetes card" from time to time at a restaurant in order to prevent a low blood sugar from worsening. I do however carry glucose tablets with me which are helpful if I'm not too far gone and actually think about the fact that I have them. This is sometimes a problem as I am not always aware that I'm low and others often notice it before I do.
